I know what you’re thinking: how am I going to figure out ways that resonate with me to help me live a better life for the rest of my life? You’ve heard about the Keto-diet, seen the word “probiotics” on all sorts of healthy-looking food items, and with so many wellness products and services it’s a wonder that you’re not already incredibly fit and healthy...

I know you like comfort, taking it easy, making yourself at home, and doing what you’ve always done. We all do. Surely science and medicine are able to make a pill that will just take care of your problems and let you get back to living life on your own terms?

Of course, in the back of your mind there’s a voice urging you to make drastic changes so you can play with the little kids in your extended family as you grow older and maybe even avoid the health problems that plagued your own parents in their later years.

But you know better.

You know that you won’t keep up with dieting for very long. After a few months you’ll slow, then stop your exercise routine. In the end, cannoli are very delicious and your customized recliner chair is very comfortable. How can you possibly make long-term changes to your lifestyle that work for you? You’ve tried it all before: there’s strange exercise equipment collecting dust in the garage and a smoothie blender in your cabinet that haven’t seen the light of day in over three years. So here’s a list of things you should probably do right now to break the cycle:

You should probably think about it while taking a short walk.

They say that movement helps you think, so I’m sure you’ll come up with some great ideas on how to improve your general fitness and health if you stretch your legs a little and put your experience and wisdom to work coming up with ideas about how to get and feel better long term.

Make yourself a little snack while you chew on this problem

Better make it with some nuts and some dried fruit like cranberries or raisins. Or better yet some nut butter. They say these foods are excellent study foods which should help you come up with some really great ideas and fuel your creativity. Dehydration has been proven to reduce your ability to cope with stress and solve problems, so make sure that you drink some water with your light snack.

Go talk about it with another person and repeat steps 1 and 2 with them.

Think about the healthiest person you know and respect and send them this article. Arrange to meet with them and exchange thoughts and ideas, while taking a short walk and having a light snack. Double the brains, double the power, I say.

Remember the great things you’ve already done that will help keep you healthy for decades.

You probably went to your annual checkup, or will schedule it after reading this. Sure, the doctor is annoying, but someone’s got to pay for this bloated healthcare system and you might as well get your money’s worth from your health insurance anyway. Ask them some questions you have - what else is 10+ years of medical training good for? It’s also a good excuse to get out of the house and see another face during the pandemic in a safe and totally necessary way. You remember the last time you replaced your toothbrush, don’t you? You can get that same warm fuzzy by totally doing it again right now. So far so good, keep up the good work.

Do some light stretching.

Clearly, your arms and legs could use a good extension. Shake it out a little, that’s right, you have musculature that needs to be flexed every once in a while. Maybe tilt your neck from one side to the other. I’ll wait.

If you ever get stuck or feel like you just can’t figure out what to do next, just repeat steps 1 to 5. I’m sure we’ll get through this together. In fact, repeat those steps as often as you’d like. It can be really hard to figure out how to make permanent changes to your lifestyle. You may even want to repeat these five simple things to really solve this complex issue like, three to five times a week. Change, after all, is one of the most difficult things to accomplish. It requires thoughtfulness.

You covered my three favorite activities: Walking, eating and mental stimulation! There are few things better in life than sharing these three activities with a companion. Another inspiring blog Laura!

Come to think of it, he really did touch on my 3 favorite things also. It's well known that the best ideas come to us while walking. Add another brain to the mix, plus some good "brain" food and you're well on your way! Glad you enjoyed this post :)
